American Flag Facts!

~ The flag was first authorized by Congress June 14, 1777. On August 3, 1949 President Truman officially declared June 14th Flag Day.

~ The colors of the American Flag are explained as such: The red is for valor, zeal and fervency; the white for hope purity, cleanliness of life, and rectitude of conduct; the blue, the color of heaven, for reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice and truth.  George Washington interpreted it as, “We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing Liberty.”

~ Each of the 50 stars symbolizes one of our 50 states in the Union.  One star for each state is emblematic of our Federal Constitution, which reserves individual sovereignty to the States except for rights delegated by the Federal Government.

~ The thirteen stripes symbolize the first 13 colonies.

~ After many design changes the flag currently has 50 stars. The last star was added when Hawaii became a state on July 4, 1960.

~ It is widely believed, but not confirmed, that Betsy Ross sewed the first American Flag.
